This is a historical village where the head families of Gyeongju Sons and Yeogang Lees reside inheriting their own traditions for over 500 years. In 2010, the village was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site with the title of “Historic Villages of Korea: Hahoe and Yangdong” by the World Heritage Committee.

It is the only a restaurant combined with a guest house where you can enjoy meals and stay in a seven-generation traditional house. You will be rather impressed by the simplicity of the traditional table setting.

This is a Confucian academy designated as the historical site no. 154 where Hoejae Lee Eon-jeok was canonized. In his later years, Hoejae settled near a stream in Angang-eup, made friends with nature, and devoted himself to the study of Neo-Confucianism for 6 years. For this reason, after Hoejae passed away, Oksanseowon was built near Dokrakdang with a valley in between to commemorate him.
In its geometric structure, Oksanseowon dramatically shows the essential beauty of the Korean Confucian academy through its arrangements that go well with the surrounding natural scenery.

Hoejae Lee Eon-jeok retired to this area (his hometown) and built this house called "Dokrakdang" with a structure suitable for the life he aimed for. It was a place of his own, low-rise and less-noticeable, where he could devote himself to study without being disturbed by others. This historic old house offers its space for a one-night stay to tourists so that you can be completely fascinated by the spirit of Hoejae as well as splendor of the surrounding scenery. It is an alley located in the corner of Andong Traditional Market. The entire alley that starts from the West Gate is called Braised Chicken Alley. Toegye made a decisive contribution to the establishment of Neo-Confucianism and the spread of Seowon Confucian academies in the Joseon Dynasty. Dosanseowon where Toegye was canonized was designated as the historical site no. 170 and regarded as one of the representative Seowons in Korea.
Dosanseowon is a nature-friendly place that looks over both rivers and plains. The surrounding landscape is so beautiful that it is often used as a subject for paintings or literary works. The structure of the academy is generally concise and simple, reflecting the dignity of Toegye and attitudes of Confucian scholars.

Nongam Lee Hyeon-bo was born in Andong in 1467 and was a fellow scholar of Toegye Yi Hwang. After his retirement, Nongam had a unique human and literary exchange with Toegye. Nongam made a great influence on the history of Korean literature by creating a range of poetry such as Eobudan-ga, Hyubin-ga, Nongam-ga, and Saengil-ga. Eobu-ga influenced Toegye’s “12 Dosan songs” as well as Eobusasisa, an outstanding Korean poem by Yun Seon-do.

Dinner Menu: Mackerel Set Meal or Mushroom Stew
The salted mackerel is one of the representative local foods of Andong. Since Andong is an inland region, mackerel had to be salted for transportation from YeongdeokGanggu Port without a freezer to prevent the fish from spoiling. Now let's try this local food, which has already become a representative cuisine brand of Korea.

It is a beautiful and quiet riverside path that runs from Dosanseowon, where Toegye Yi Hwang lived, to Cheongnyangsan Mountain. Yedungil is the modern notation of the old word "Nyeodungil." Yedungil that Toegye would walk is compared to "Philosophenweg (philosopher's path)” loved by Goethe in Heidelberg, Germany.

Gosanjeong Pavilion built by GeumNansoo, a disciple of Toegye Yi Hwang, was designated as the Tangible Cultural Property No. 274 of Gyeongsangbuk-do in 1992. Among the Dosan 9 songs, the 7th and 8th songs (namely between Dansa-song and Gosan-song) are considered the masterpiece. Gosanjeong Pavilion became a hot tourist spot among young people after the place was used for filming a romantic scene in a recent popular TV drama titled Mr. Sunshine.

Lunch: Heotjesabap
Heotjesabap is a traditional Korean food, and is similar to bibimbap; instead of red pepper paste, only soy sauce is used for this food. This local dish originates from Andong, which was famous as a place for study among Confucian scholars in the Joseon Dynasty. It literally means "food for an annual fake ancestral rite.”

Remarks : A restaurant in Hahoe village

It is a representative lineage village in Korea where Poongsan Ryus have lived for over 600 years. Hahoe Village was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site, along with Yangdong Village in Gyeongju in recognition of their lives harmonized with nature. It is also the place where Ryu Un-yong, a Confucian scholar in the Joseon Dynasty, and Ryu Seong-ryong, who served as Yeongui-jeong (Prime Minister) during the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592, were brought up. Hahoe village is a living space as well as a living heritage of Korea where the traditional lives of Koreans have been passed down from generation to generation.

It is a cliff next to the pine forest in Gwangdeok-ri across the river northwest of Hahoe Village. From this cliff, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Hahoe Village. Gyeomjeongsa House built by Gyeomam Ryu Un-yong is located nearby. It is one of the best places boasting of a spectacular view in Hahoe and is also a cultural property designated as Important Folklore Material No. 89.
